1. Regarding the gun-bearing group's guard personnel wearing hemp formal dress and leg coverings for main castle guards and patrol personnel. Same as above. 1. From New Year's Day through the third day, serving guard duty in hemp formal dress all day 1. Wearing hemp formal dress when the lord returns to castle and when he departs 1. Only morning shift personnel on January 11th and August 1st, same as above 1. Only morning shift personnel during the five seasonal festivals, same as above 1. Main castle guard personnel wearing leg coverings from September festival to March festival 1. Patrol personnel without leg coverings from April to September 1. Designated leg coverings during fires The above has been established from long ago, but was further decided and recorded at squad leader meetings Bunka 3, Year of the Tiger ―Reference should be made to the matter from Tenpō 11, four pages earlier 1. Regarding the matter of half-shaved hairstyles as ordered. Same as above. 1. In the 2nd month of Bunsei 4, when Lord Hasebe Kozaemon was on monthly duty, the squad leaders of twelve groups were summoned and given the following written order: 1. Regarding the half-shaved hairstyle of the gun-bearing group, while there have been regulations from ancient times, recently it has become careless, with hair pushed back, and especially among young men, some cannot be distinguished from those with partially shaved heads, which is deemed unacceptable. Therefore, quickly reform according to previous regulations, and henceforth ensure that everyone strictly follows the regulations without misunderstanding. Based on the written order given above, after squad leaders met, the following was agreed upon to prevent groups from developing different styles: 1. Regarding shaving, establish it in the middle of the monthly shaving, with shaving width about 1 sun 5 bu, reforming the shaving style to the ancient comb method as ordered 1. Regarding sideburns, make them slope down at the back 1. Do not shave the back of the shaved area, but clip it according to ancient method 1. Never place brush tips on top of the shaved area The above was agreed upon and decided 1. Regarding letters to Edo from the gun-bearing group. Same as above. 1. On the 3rd day of the 4th month of Bunsei 7, when express messengers were dispatched, it was previously ordered that official correspondence from gun-bearing group members and squad leaders, as well as lodging letters from those on duty, should be made with very low bulk, with each group submitting about 5 bu worth. However, it was heard that various separate sealed letters were being submitted through intermediaries. Henceforth, it was strictly ordered to the clerks that separate sealed letters, and even squad leader letters, would absolutely not be accepted if submitted in bulky packages. Especially since economy measures have been ordered for all sectors this time, squad leaders should be even more careful to avoid misunderstandings. 1. On the 29th day of the 5th month of An'ei 9, Eguchi Kōhachi and Takeuchi Jinzaemon, who served as guides for the administered territory, were each granted an increase of 1 koku in stipend and appointed to military service. However, the aforementioned Jinzaemon, with 7 koku and provisions for 2 men, could not be ordered to adopt foreign style, so while a long gun was set aside, permission was sought from the senior retainers to order foreign style. Tenmei 2, 13th day of 7th month 1. On the 21st day of the 10th month of Kyōhō 12, the advance scouts submitted a written petition requesting one guide each from among their group members, but on the 25th of the same month, it was returned with the statement that such requests could not be accepted at this time. 1. On the 21st day of the 11th month of the same 17th year, the head of naval personnel had previously petitioned for special allowances due to the naval group squad leaders being treated differently from other groups and facing hardship from heavy duties, but it was not accepted. However, it was understood that previously assistants had been assigned. Even though written petitions were submitted regarding these matters, they were not taken up for consideration.
