After that, while there was an earthquake at the seventh hour [around midnight] on the night of the 12th of the 6th month, it was of the sort that occasionally occurs in ordinary times. One should feel gratitude for having survived such a great earthquake with one's life, and devote oneself to religious faith. Furthermore, although I wished, in my spare time beyond the duties of loyalty and filial piety, to visit the famous scenic spots and historical sites in the vicinity, due to exhaustion from the earthquake and falling behind in agricultural work, we barely managed to complete payment of this year's tribute [nengu] and saw the year out. As the new year dawned, the earthquakes had settled within the Year of the Monkey, and the era name too was changed —
