On the night of the 22nd of the 8th month, around the half-past-four-o'clock watch (approximately 11:00 PM), there was a major earthquake, and people rushed outside. Then on the 25th of the 8th month; the night of the 3rd of the 9th month; the night of the 12th of the 9th month; the 29th of the 9th month; the 4th of the 10th month; the 9th of the 10th month; the 12th of the 10th month; the night of the 13th of the 10th month; the night of the 22nd of the 10th month; the night of the 1st of the 11th month; the night of the 6th of the 11th month; the night of the 15th of the 11th month; the 1st of the 12th month; the 2nd of the 12th month; the night of the 3rd of the 12th month; the night of the 19th of the 12th month; the 20th of the 12th month; the night of the 24th of the 12th month. In the 5th year of Kōka, the Year of the Monkey (1848): the night of the 3rd of the 1st month; the 6th of the 1st month; the 18th of the 1st month; the night of the 20th of the 1st month; the night of the 26th of the 1st month — throughout all this time, earthquakes continued without cease. Until the beginning of the 5th month, small tremors persisted at intervals, and thereafter, although there was an earthquake on the night of the 12th of the 6th month at the seventh-hour watch (approximately 4:00 AM), this was of the sort of occasional earthquake that occurs in ordinary times. One should consider it a blessing to have survived this great earthquake, and should devote oneself to faith. Furthermore, while I wished to visit the famous places and historical sites in the surrounding area during time free from agricultural work, due to exhaustion from the earthquake and the resulting delays in farming, it was all we could do to complete the payment of this year's tribute (nengu), and thus we sent off the year. Come the new year, the earthquakes too, together with the change of era name in the Year of the Monkey—
