The era name that had been proclaimed and taught to the people was also joyfully changed—there was a new era name (Kaei). In early spring, I visited not only my local tutelary shrine and the ujigami shrine, but first of all the revered upper shrine, and as a token of my visit, I wished to offer a composed poem. Though my verse is clumsy, since it comes from my own heart, I thought it might serve as an act of devotion—and though I considered it of little account, I turned it over in my mind:
Here: How boundless and blessed is this eternal reign—
Celebrating ten thousand years, as the pine wishes.
(Read aloud, with two deep bows)
What follows is not written in a spirit of frivolity or to entertain, but as a guide for the understanding of future generations, recorded here in verse form. On the right (of the map) are marked Iwakura Village and Magose Village.
Iwakura and Magose linked together to Hanakura—
the waters of the Sai River
stopped and blocked as one.
(The landslide) swept far around the back mountains of Oyagi Village and Furujuku Village (both villages) and Ayaniwa Village, and plunged into the Sai River, burying it.
Oyagi, alas—Furujuku too, swept so far away—
