The era name, which had been proclaimed and made widely known, was changed to "Kōei" [Kaei, meaning "joyous eternity"]. In early spring, I visited the parish shrine [ujigami] and the tutelary birth deity [ubusunagami] as a matter of course, and above all, I made a pilgrimage to the great upper shrine [o-kamisha], wishing to offer a poem in place of a votive offering. Though the verse is clumsy, as it comes from my own heart, I thought it might serve as an act of devotion — though it is not worthy of being counted among proper compositions, it is offered humbly as my own poor effort:
*How boundless and grateful is this realm that never ends —*
*From beneath the shadows of the pine, we celebrate ten thousand years.*
[Offered with deep and repeated reverence]
What follows
is written not to entertain, but as a guide for the understanding of future generations, set down here in verse. The villages known as Iwakura and Magose [were affected as follows]:
*Iwakura and Magose, linked together toward Hanakura —*
*The waters of the Sai River are dammed up as one.*
The two villages of Oyagi and Furushuku, [their landslide debris] sweeping far and wide around the back mountain of Anniwa village, thrust deep into and buried the Sai River.
*Oyagi and Furushuku, together stretching far and wide —*
