One of his kept courtesans, an *oiran* named Umekawa, had been languishing with a lingering illness, and so it was decided that this quiet retreat would be most suitable for her convalescence. The head attendant Umeharu accompanied her for nursing duties, and together they had been residing there for some time. It happened to be autumn: the cold dew lay heavy, chrysanthemums had been ravaged by tobacco worms, pampas grasses had been bundled into charcoal sacks, and the garden plants had faded. Even the faint, threadlike cry of the bell cricket was enough to startle the ear of one mired in the bitter sea of the pleasure trade — might it not be a bell tolling its nightly warning? And then, falling softly, a misty rain — (continues)
