又一か宅を問しにこゝは強き損所もなく見へたり又鈴木町
なる日下数馬に立寄りしに玄関客間ハやゝかたふきしかと
潰れにハ到らすそれより宅（六ヶ）甬坂を下りて久松氏の屋敷をの
そき見るに表長屋の半棟と客座敷の辺潰れしさま也後日
数歴て久松氏の家士渋谷某と云もの児改容か学友にて
来り語るをきくに果して己かおもひしことく長屋潰れ
あまつさへ主人の祖父なる隠居その所に住して実ハ圧
死すといへり此隠居は己征甬なりし時馬術の相弟子にて

現代語訳
空き地があれば、皆そこに仮小屋を建てて当座の雨風をしのいでいる。万一非常の事態が起きた場合には、どうにもならないだろう。そこを過ぎて小川町に出たところ、あの辺りも地震で潰れたと見えて、破損した家が多く、また三、四か所から出火して類焼が多かったため、死傷した人もいたに違いない。
土浦藩の屋敷の脇から駿河台に登り、むねつき坂下にある小栗又一の屋敷を訪ねてみたところ、ここは大きな損傷もないように見えた。また鈴木町にある日下数馬のところに立ち寄ったところ、玄関と客間はやや傾いていたが、倒壊には至らなかった。そこから自宅（六か所）の甬坂を下りて久松氏の屋敷をのぞき見ると、表長屋の半棟と客座敷の辺りが潰れた様子であった。後日、日を経て、久松氏の家臣で渋谷某という者が、児改容（筆者の知人）の学友として訪ねてきて語るのを聞くと、果たして自分が思っていた通り長屋が潰れ、しかも主人の祖父にあたる隠居がその場所に住んでおり、実は圧死したとのことであった。この隠居は、筆者が征甬（江戸城西丸の御書院番）であった時に馬術の稽古仲間で、栄三郎といった。その後、たまたま同じ番組となり、（割注：御書院一番組である。後に忠次郎と改名し与頭ともなったが、いささか差し障る事があって早々に隠居し、心甫と号した。）また囲碁を好まれていたので、その道での交わりもあった程の旧友であったが、今回このような非業の死を遂げたと聞き、まことに悲しいことである。

Wherever there is open space, people have built temporary huts to shelter themselves from the rain and dew. Should some emergency occur under these circumstances, there would be no way to deal with it. Passing through there and coming out at Ogawamachi, that area too appeared to have been devastated by the earthquake, with many damaged houses, and since fires had broken out in three or four places causing widespread burning, there must have been casualties.
Climbing up to Surugadai from the side of the Tsuchiura domain residence, I went to inquire after Oguri Mataichi at the foot of Munetsuki slope, and this place appeared to have no serious damage. I also stopped by Kusaka Kazuma's house in Suzukimachi, where the entrance hall and reception room were somewhat tilted but had not collapsed. From there, descending Yōzaka from my own residence (six households), I peered into the Hisamatsu family's estate, where it appeared that half of the front tenement building and the area around the reception rooms had collapsed. Several days later, a retainer of the Hisamatsu family, a man named Shibuya, came to visit as a fellow student of Ji Kaiyō (an acquaintance of the author) and told me that, just as I had suspected, the tenement had indeed collapsed, and moreover, the master's grandfather—a retired elder who lived there—had in fact been crushed to death. This retired elder had been a fellow student of horsemanship when the author served as a guard (征甬), and was called Eizaburō. (Marginal note: He was in the First Company of the御書院番 [Goshoingban]. He later changed his name to Chūjirō and became a yorigashira [group leader], but due to some difficulty, he retired early and took the Buddhist name Shimpo.) He also had a fondness for Go, and we had shared that connection as well—he was quite an old friend—and to hear that he had met such a sudden and violent end was truly sorrowful.
The 9th day. Intending to visit the home of Nakayama Zentayū, who lives in Nagatachō—(Marginal note: He is a land-tenant in the estate of Okumura Jizaemon. Originally serving as a falconer of the Fukiage [garden] detail, he had grown old and retired this past summer, passing his post to his son Eijirō. He had intended to establish a separate residence here, but due to some slight impediment, officially he was still considered to be residing together [with the household] within the Kijibashi official estate, while privately he had been living in this house since the ninth month. Zentayū's wife is the elder sister of Ikeda Shinnosuke, and a niece of the author's.)——
