汝（なんぢ）がごとき小人（しやうじん）が用（もち）ゆる時（とき）は。かへつて禍（わざはひ）をうち
出（いだ）す。人参（にんじん）はよく人（ひと）を助（たす）くる良薬（りやうやく）なれ共。俗医（やぶい）
是（これ）を用ゆる時は。却（かへつ）て人を害（がい）す。学問（がくもん）は。国（くに）を治（おさ）め。
家（いへ）を斉（とゝな）ふものなれども。腐儒（ふじゆ）。是（これ）を用（もち）ゆる時（とき）は
かへつて。国（くに）を乱（みだ）し。家（いへ）を亡（ほろぼ）す。金銀（きんぎん）は。困窮（こんきう）を

小人（しやうしん）。是をもちゆるときは。或（あるひ）は奢（おご）り。或は吝（やぶさか）にして。
人（ひと）をもくるしめ。我（わが）身（み）も治（おさ）めず。終（つい）に子孫（しそん）を滅（たや）す
なり。爰（こゝ）をおもへば。人参（にんじん）にもよらず。学問（かくもん）にも
よらず。金銀（きんぎん）にもよらず。打出（うちで）の小槌（こづち）にもよらず。
用（もち）ゆるものが。小人（しやうじん）なれば。いつにても。禍（わざはひ）をうち

お前のような小人（しょうじん）が用いるときは、かえって禍（わざわい）を打ち出してしまうものだ。人参（にんじん）はよく人を助ける良薬であっても、藪医者がこれを用いるときは、かえって人を害する。学問は国を治め家を整えるものであっても、腐儒（ふじゅ）がこれを用いるときは、かえって国を乱し家を滅ぼす。金銀は困窮を助け、人をも救い、子孫を保つものであっても、小人がこれを用いるときは、あるいは奢り、あるいは吝嗇（りんしょく）になって人をも苦しめ、自分自身も治めることができず、ついには子孫を絶やしてしまうのだ。このことを思えば、人参によるのでもなく、学問によるのでもなく、金銀によるのでもなく、打出の小槌によるのでもない。用いる者が小人であれば、いつであっても禍を打ち出し、用いる者が賢人であれば、福を打ち出すと見えるのだ。良医は毒薬をも薬とし、良工（りょうこう）は腐った材木をも捨てずと聞けば、お前もこの槌や、打ち出した遊女や芸子や幇間（たいこもち）がお前の家を野原にしてしまったとばかり恨むことはするな。芸子、遊女や幇間は、

Ginseng root is an excellent medicine that greatly aids people, yet when a quack doctor employs it, it instead harms them. Scholarship is something that governs nations and puts households in good order, yet when a corrupt and pedantic scholar employs it, it instead throws nations into disorder and brings households to ruin. Gold and silver are things that relieve hardship, save people, and preserve one's descendants, yet when a small-minded person employs them, he either squanders them in extravagance or hoards them in miserliness, tormenting others and failing to govern even himself, and in the end, brings his line of descendants to extinction. Reflecting on all this, one can see that it does not depend on the ginseng, nor on the learning, nor on the gold and silver, nor on the magic mallet itself. If the one who wields it is a small-minded person, then at all times it will strike forth misfortune; if the one who wields it is a person of wisdom and virtue, then it will strike forth good fortune. Hearing that a skilled physician turns even poisons into medicine, and that a skilled craftsman discards not even rotten timber, know then that you must not go about blaming this mallet, or the courtesans, geisha, and jesters (taikomochi) it produced, simply because they turned your household into a barren wasteland.
