知（し）る事かたしといへども。日夜（にちや）おこたらずして。如此（かくのごとく）に。
教訓（けうくん）を聞（きく）ものは。何物（なんもの）ぞ。見（み）るものは何（なん）ものぞと。此（この）
見聞（けんもん）の二（ふた）つをば。誠（まこと）をつくし。信実（しんじつ）に尋（たづ）ねさがし
なば。一旦（いつたん）豁然（わつぜん）として。貫通（くはんとう）するの時（とき）あらん。この時（とき）
にこそ。打出（うちで）の小槌（こづち）もいらばこそ。望（のぞみ）のまゝに。七珍（しつちん）

こそ。妓女（げいこ）。女郎（ぢよらう）を打出（うちいだ）せし。火宅（くはたく）の中の。火宅（くはたく）を

知ることは難しいと言っても、昼夜怠らずに、このように教訓を聞くものは何者か、見るものは何者かと、この「見」と「聞」の二つを、誠心誠意、真剣に尋ね探し求めるならば、ある時、突然すべてが豁然と開けて、貫き通す時があるだろう。その時こそ、打出の小槌も要らないほどに、望みのままに七珍万宝を打ち出して、安楽の世界にゆったりと腰を落ち着けることができるだろう。そのような折にこそ、芸妓や女郎を打ち出してきた、火宅（この苦しみに満ちた世界）の中の「火宅」というものを真に知ることができるだろう。しかし、それはいつのことになるやら分からない。まずは、さしあたり——

Though it is difficult to truly know, if one does not slacken day or night, and diligently inquires — with complete sincerity and genuine earnestness — into these two things: "Who is it that listens to such teachings?" and "Who is it that sees?" — then there shall surely come a moment when all at once everything opens up with sudden clarity and penetrating understanding. At that very moment, one would have no need even for the magic mallet of good fortune; one could bring forth the Seven Treasures and ten thousand riches as one wishes, and settle oneself comfortably in a world of peace and ease. And it is precisely at such a moment that one would truly come to understand the "burning house within the burning house" — that world of suffering from which geisha and courtesans were conjured forth. Yet when that day shall come — who can say? For now, to the matter most immediately at hand——
