【Right folio】 (Hideyoshi) had also shown compassion during Hori (Jirō)'s time and brought Higuchi over to their side. Even after that, it is said that the retainers (hitomochi) of the Asakura and those of the Azai largely came over to Nobunaga's side through Hideyoshi's ingenuity. However, because so many high-stipend retainers had joined Nobunaga's side after the fall of the Azai domain, there was little clearly designated reward land (myōchi) left to distribute. It was whispered as malicious gossip that (Hideyoshi) had an ulterior motive of removing Higuchi and placing the domain under his own administration. One item: For a period of three years, Lord Nobunaga was occupied in the vicinity of Osaka, where the ikki forces had colluded with the Honganji followers to pin him down and keep him engaged. Because of this delay, the suppression of the ikki in Echizen Province was prolonged and drawn out. 【Left folio】 ...and so came to be delayed. One item: Lord Nobunaga, evading the Azai forces, traveled from Kyoto via the Kutsuki mountain pass to Tsuruga in Echizen Province. On that occasion, Lord Ieyasu accompanied him, and they requested lodging for one night from Kutsuki Shinano-no-Kami. From there they proceeded to Kumakawa, and from there again crossed over to Sakaki. With the main camp established at the Kushikawa pine grove, the castle of Tsutsuki having already fallen, when (Nobunaga) had surrounded Kanegasaki, Azai Nagamasa colluded with (the Asakura of) Echizen and changed sides (against Nobunaga). 《Interlinear note: Regarding how Lord Ieyasu's celebrated action saved Lord Nobunaga at this time, and regarding the route by which Lord Ieyasu made his retreat—》 《Interlinear note: these matters are recorded in the "Azai Sandai Ikusa Oboegaki" (Military Record of Three Generations of the Azai) in your possession, exactly as written therein. As the details of the rearguard action at Kanegasaki are already contained in that memorandum,》 《Interlinear note: there is no need to repeat them here, and so I shall now set down only a rough outline.》
