【Right folio】 One item: From the Azai side, Fujikake Mikawa-no-Kami was dispatched as an envoy carrying a sworn oath (誓紙) to Fuwa Kawachi-no-Kami, and as a result, extraordinary alarm spread through the army. It was said that Lord Nobunaga ought to take his own life (commit seppuku). Lord Ieyasu devised a plan of signals for the retreat, and the withdrawal was arranged. When the hour of the signal came, the plan was that the banner chiefs (旗頭) would draw near to Lord Nobunaga and he would make his retreat—but when (Nobunaga) called out asking who would serve as rearguard and remain behind to provide cover, not a single one among the assembled ranks of distinguished retainers said they would remain. Thereupon (Nobunaga) declared, "Then let us draw the short straw—whoever draws it shall remain," yet 【Left folio】 there was no one who would even agree to draw lots. Fujishirō Hideyoshi, who was seated far down at the lowest end of the gathering, stepped forward and spoke: "If for this rearguard duty Your Lordship would assign me two or three hundred bowmen and musketeers, I will remain behind. If Your Lordship provides the two or three hundred bowmen and musketeers, and if our fellow lords and retainers would each lend me ten or twenty men, then I will remain, and even if the Asakura forces come on in pursuit by the million, I will hold enough men in place to cover your rear and conceal your retreat." Upon hearing this, Lord Nobunaga broke into a grin and said, "There goes Hideyoshi making his grand boasts again," and the assembled retainers (hitomochi) all...
