【Right folio】 Placing (the ambush troops) at three positions on the left and right, each separated by one "chō" of distance, with fifty personal guards forming a circle in front of the initial ambush forces—Nobunaga retreated to Sagaki and lodged for the night under the care of Awaya Etchū no Kami. Meanwhile, the men of Kanegasaki said: "Who is this person acting as Nobunaga's rearguard? My, what a contemptible sight these castle defenders make of themselves. Drive them off and capture them!" Upon the order of the Nakatsukasa-tayū, about three hundred men charged out in a great black surge. Hideyoshi had already arranged a password in advance: the call of "Die here! This is the place!" served as the signal for the left-flank archers and gunners to open fire; and at the second call, 【Left folio】 the right-flank archers and gunners were also to open fire—such were the signals he had arranged in advance. Hideyoshi feigned holding back the enemy force of some three hundred with only about fifty men, and drew them back about five tan (roughly 550 meters). The Kanegasaki forces, thinking "the enemy is few," gave chase, whereupon Hideyoshi cried "Die here! This is the place!" twice, and from both flanks the troops raised a great battle cry all at once and unleashed volleys of arrows and gunfire. The Kanegasaki forces fell into disarray. With his personal guard of one hundred and fifty men, Hideyoshi drove the enemy back about three chō (roughly 330 meters) under cover of smoke. When yet another force of six or seven hundred men charged out from Kanegasaki, Hideyoshi deployed his ambush troops in stages according to the same signals as before, and no matter how large the enemy force…
