The former castle lord of Fuchū, Ryūmonji, had been living in hiding in a certain mountain village. Kakuda learned of this and sent a messenger to say: "Since we have long been on speaking terms with one another, I have by no means forgotten you. Please come here without delay.
I will speak favorably of you to Lord Nobunaga and see to it that you receive a letter of assurance (ando no kyōsho) guaranteeing your landholdings." Having conveyed this with great warmth and sincerity, Ryūmonji was overjoyed and promptly made his way to Hikouemon's residence. Kakuda received him in audience and treated him with every appearance of cordiality and goodwill. Ryūmonji, thoroughly reassured, bowed with deep gratitude. Hikouemon no Jō then secretly summoned a young page of the same surname named Sōhachi and instructed him in the manner of signals and the like, telling him that he was to kill Ryūmonji. Sōhachi accepted the order, saying "I understand."
