(Continued from the previous page) Ryūmonji said, "That is truly a blessed object. As I have not had the chance to view it for a long while, I would dearly like to see it once more." "Very well, then," came the reply, and Sōhachi was called. Sōhachi brought out the sword and handed it to Ryūmonji. Upon examining it, Ryūmonji had not the slightest suspicion. "My, my — what a magnificent piece," he said admiringly. At that moment, Sōhachi stepped forward and said, "I too would like to have a look, if I may." Hikouemon [side note: "the impertinence of it"] feigned great anger at this, whereupon Ryūmonji, in a spirit of benevolence and compassion, said, "It is only natural for a young man to wish to see it. Do show it to him," and handed the sword directly to Sōhachi. Sōhachi took firm hold of the sword and cut Ryūmonji down with a diagonal slash from shoulder to hip. It was a pitiful sight to behold. From this point on, the influence of the (Kakuda) faction weakened, and throughout the province of Echizen, the rōnin as well as the common people and peasants all came to regard Hikouemon and the other two men with utter contempt and alienation. From the beginning of the eleventh month (Shimotsuki) of that year, snow began to fall and the roads became treacherous, and so Asakura Magosaburō, Awaga Saburō, Horie Jinsuke, and Shichiri Mikawa no Kami and others secretly gathered together to confer, saying: "These three men received deep and abiding favor from the lord (Asakura house) and inherited their domains, yet they plotted rebellion, [side note: struck down] the lord (Yoshikage), and on top of that, the affair of Ryūmonji — their self-serving and willful conduct is without precedent in all of history. In the midst of this snowfall, it is unlikely that Nobunaga will send reinforcing troops. The people of this province... [continued on the next page]
