(Continued from the previous page) — they secretly persuaded the people throughout the province, and sent word to Kennyo Shōnin at Osaka, requesting that an uprising [side note: "be raised"], the three men be slain, and the lingering resentment of the [side note: lord (Yoshikage)'s] departed spirit be appeased. Upon receiving this message, Osaka responded, "This is entirely reasonable," and appointed Shimottsuma Chikugo as the commanding general. On the twentieth day of the eleventh month, with Asakura Magosaburō, Shichiri Mikawa no Kami, and Horie Jinsuke serving as field commanders, a force of more than eight thousand men, all clad in snow-weather gear and wearing snowshoes (sori), pressed forward against the Toyohara (Toyotomi) encampment. In the pre-dawn hours of that day [side note: "of"], they raised their battle cry and launched a full frontal assault across the open ground. The soldiers inside the castle had no snow gear and could only flee; those who offered no resistance were [side note: spared]. Sakurada Harima no Kami also attempted to escape and hid in the shadow of the riverbank, but was captured alive, beheaded, and cast aside. [Headnote: "I do not know the proper names and formal titles of these commanders, and have recorded them as I heard them. If there are those with accurate information, I ask for their corrections."] Against the castle at Ōno, Awaga [side note: "ka"] Shikasaburō, Wakabayashi Nagato (father and son), and [side note: "Awata"] Odanabe Jihachirō led a force of more than eight thousand men. They too pressed forward in the pre-dawn hours, raised their battle cry, and made preparations to set fire to the castle. Shikibu no Tayū fought valiantly and charged out three times, but as he lacked snow gear, his movements were greatly hampered, and in the end he was struck down and perished. Against the castle at Fuchū, Keya Inosuke, Mitani Gonojō, and Awa Tanabe Shichirō led the main body of commanders, with a force of more than two thousand, and surrounded it in the pre-dawn hours of the same day. Inside the castle, all fell into panic and confusion — [Continued on the next page]
