[Right folio] (Continued from the previous page) ...while they were in a state of panic and confusion, attackers broke in from one direction and set fire to the castle. Within the castle, there were also those who had secretly marked themselves as allies [side note: "of the attacking force"], and they too set fires; many fled. As Hikouemonojō attempted to flee, Keya Shichirō rushed upon him, ran him through with a single spear thrust, and effortlessly struck off his head. Truly, it was by the disloyalty of these three villains that Yoshikage had been forced to take his own life on the twentieth day of the eighth month of this very year. Only some ninety days had passed since then, and now, without even a single proper battle, they had been cut down by the ikki—how pitiful a fate. Thus the men of the ikki rejoiced greatly, and offered their loyalty as a memorial tribute to their late lord. [Left folio] Then the commanders of the ikki conferred together, saying: "Nobunaga will soon come rushing here. It would be ill-advised to let him break through our lines. We should construct fortifications at every key point along the roads and hold him off." Accordingly, at the border between Kōhoku (northern Ōmi) and Echizen, at the land fortress of Sakatori (Itatoru), Shimottsuma Izumi no Kami was stationed; at the stronghold of Kime Pass, Ishida, Saikōji, and Horie Jinsuke were positioned; at Imazō and the castle of Hiuchi, [Head note: "The correct character(s) for 'Hatsufuse' (Hachifuse) are unknown."] Shichiri Mikawa no Kami [side note: "at the castle of Hachifuse"]; at Hachifuse, Awa [side note: "Ga? or Shika?"] Ga Saburō and his brothers; at the castle of Suitsu (or Somatsu), Ōtsutsumi En [side note: "this character is unclear and uncertain"]; at the strongholds of Fukuji and Kōno, Wakabayashi Nagato no Kami and his son; at the castle of Fuchū, Miyake Gonojō (possibly Mitani Gonojō); at the castle of Toyohara (Toyotomi), Shimoma Chikugo no Kami garrisoned himself; and throughout the [side note: "province"]...
