[Right folio]
(Continued from the previous page) ...and thus the orders were given.
Item: Kinoshita Tōkichirō Hideyoshi had at this time taken up residence in the former castle of the Azai clan at Odani-yama. Upon hearing that the ikki of Echizen Province had risen up and had killed off all the castle lords whom Lord Nobunaga had installed throughout the province, Hideyoshi set out urgently toward the Tsuruga front in the eleventh month [deletion/side note: "possibly the 28th day"]. Among those who accompanied him were Isono Tanba no Kami, the son of Aobe Awaji no Kami (Mangōrō), Shinjo Suruga no Kami, the acting commander for Hori Jirō, Higuchi Saburōbei, and others—totaling more than six thousand horsemen who rushed forward [side note: "se" (an alternate reading)]. 《Inserted note: Although six thousand is stated, it is believed that there were probably no more than three thousand.》
Item: Upon hearing of this, Lord Nobunaga sent word to Niwa Gorōzaemon no Jō Nagahide, who was garrisoned at Sawayama in Inukami District, Ōmi Province:
[Left folio]
"A report has come that the ikki of Echizen Province has risen up and that Hideyoshi is rushing to the Tsuruga front. You too should join forces with Hideyoshi and suppress them." Upon receiving these orders, Nagahide likewise rushed toward the Rōsaka-guchi (Rōsaka Pass entrance). Among those accompanying him were Taga Shin'emon no Jō, Ogawa Magoshirō, Yamazaki Genta-zaemon no Jō, Takanose Etchū no Kami [side note: "also known as Sakon"], and others—totaling more than four thousand horsemen. 《Inserted note: This force too is believed to have been approximately two thousand.》 However, both Hideyoshi's force and Nagahide's force found the snow so deep and heavily accumulated that it was impossible to advance—as if one would need to be a bird to make progress. Hideyoshi and Nagahide conferred and sent a report to Gifu. Upon hearing of this, Lord Nobunaga said: "Withdraw from that front immediately. As soon as the snow melts next year..."
