**[Right folio]**
"*Tsuchi*" resembles the earth (as in the fire deity Kagutsuchi) in form, yet its meaning must be different. Along the riverbank of Aigai-no (合貝野) in Kawabe District, around the area called Kai-kobuchi, it is said that when one digs down into the spots where various shells emerge, one finds scallops (*hotategai*), *mirugai* (giant clam), beach vine (*hamazuru*), and the like. This must be a place where the sea transformed into land in relatively recent times.
A shrine (*hogura*) was built on the spot where the deity's sacred ship was buried, and the Ship-Spirit Deity (*Funatama-no-kami*) is enshrined there. The place is also called "Mifune-no-oka" (the Hill of the Sacred Ship), now known simply as "Funaoka." The name "Mifune" (御船) appears in the *Wamyōshō* [Lexicon of Japanese Words] as a name in Yamamoto District [marginal note: now called Senboku District]. The distance between Sakai village in Senboku District and Mifune-no-oka in Kawabe District may be some fifty-plus *chō* — they are in neighboring districts. In ancient times, that land was in Yamamoto District. Long ago, Sakai village had six tributary villages (*yorigo*) [marginal note: Sakai village being the parent village (*oyago*)]: Arakawa, Kami-Yodogawa, Naka-Yodogawa, Shimo-Yodogawa, Kodane, and Fukubera. The details of each of these villages ought to be recorded in their respective entries.

**The Shrine of Karamatsu Gongen
In Kami-Tōmai village, a branch village (*edamura*) in Ogachi District, there is also a place called Karamatsu village; whether there are other places of the same name elsewhere I cannot say. The shrine in this Sakai village is said to enshrine the goddess Okinaga-Tarashi-Hime
Could this be a shrine that was transferred from Harima Province and elsewhere in ancient times? It is said that in Harima Province there is the Hime-kami Shrine on Mt. Karamatsu (韓松山). The *Harima no Kuni Fudoki* (風土記 of Harima Province) states regarding the village of Harihara (萩原の里):
**[Left folio]**
"There is a well in the land. As for those who name [the place] Harihara: when Okinaga-Tarashi-Hime-no-Mikoto (息長帶日賣命) was returning from the land of Kara (Korea), her sacred ship lodged at this village," and so forth; "thereupon a sacred well (*mi-i*) was opened, called the Harima Well (*Harima-i*)," and so forth.
Regarding Okinaga-Tarashi-Hime-no-Mikoto (気長足姫尊): the *Nihon Shoki* (Chronicles of Japan) records that she was "the great-granddaughter of Emperor Wakayamato-Nekohiko-Ohhihi [marginal note: referring to Emperor Kaikwa, the ninth emperor], and the daughter of Prince Okinaga-no-Sukune-ō. Her mother is called Kazuraki-no-Takanuka-Hime." The *Sandai Jitsuroku* (三代実録, True Record of Three Reigns) also refers to her as "Ōtarashi-Hime."
In the *Kojikiden* (古事記伝, Commentary on the Kojiki) [marginal note: Book Twenty-Two], it is written: "As for Okinaga-Tarashi-Hime-no-Mikoto: [she bore] the same name as her father — could it be that she was born and raised in that very place?" — and so forth.
It must have been around the Genroku era when the daughter of Lord Tokku'in-den [marginal note: referring to Satake-uji, Junior Grade General of the Left Imperial Guards, Lord Minamoto-no-Asomi Yoshioki], known as Princess Hisa, was wed to Kuroda Oki-no-Kami Minamoto-no-Nakanori, castle lord of Akizuki in Chikuzen Province. In what was likely the Hōei era, she came to the final month of pregnancy and fell gravely and most heavily ill. She said: "I have heard that in the mountains of the north of Dewa Province resides a princess deity of the Karamatsu [Shrine]. It is well known that prayers to this deity are answered. Please go quickly and petition that divine being to relieve this bodily suffering of mine."
Thereupon the men and women (attendants) serving nearby at once purified themselves, turned to face the direction of Dewa Province, and, bowing reverently in prostration, offered their worship...
