【Right Page】 【Header Notes】 In Volume 12 of the Shincho-ki (Record of Nobunaga), regarding the execution of Hatano, it is written: "Likewise on the 18th day, the Daihoji clan of Dewa presented five excellent horses and, from among eleven prize hawks, two white hawks. To the Daihoji clan were given two hundred ryo of gold, twenty bolts of dull silk, and five tiger skins; the messengers were granted two hundred ryo of silver. Furthermore, Tono Magojiro of Oshu presented a white hawk along with these. From Senboku of Dewa, Maeda Satsuma no Kami came to the capital to present three prize hawks and offer his respects," and so it is recorded. 【Main Text】 However, the written records are sparse and also brief, so there is nothing to be done. In the Amagasu Monogatari, there appears an account of a man named Yamakita Saemon Kuro Yoshisada who lived to be over a hundred years old and passed away around the Johei era. This is recorded in detail in the section on Sugi no Miya in Ogachi District. In Volume 5 of the Shaseki-shu: "In the middle ages, at a place called Tanaka no Sho in Hitachi Province, there was a mountain ascetic (yamabushi) named Kokanbo. He was secretly meeting with the wife of a farmer named Fujio who lived nearby. Perhaps thinking to have the mountain ascetic's lineage continued, this matter naturally became known (to the husband), who was greatly chagrined. However, since there was a teacher-patron relationship between them, and the yamabushi was a celebrated practitioner who led pilgrimages to Kumano, (the husband) thought it would not be proper to bring shame upon him. When going on a pilgrimage to Kumano, (the husband) took his wife along, and since there was someone they knew at a place called Senboku in Oshu《Annotation: This should be Dewa Province—likely an error》, they descended to visit them. Soon after arriving, when they looked at the house, the people had fled and no one was there. Feeling wretched, (the husband) asked people about this, but since (the wife) had hidden her destination from the start, no one knew. Then, looking near the sleeping chamber, (he found) a poem written on a pillar in his wife's own hand: 'If you long for me, ask and come find me, Kokanbo—I am in Senboku, at the home of Fujishiro.' 【Left Page】 【Main Text】 Seeing this, (the husband) felt both pity and helpless anguish, and though she could not possibly see it, following his heart's direction, he decided to write a reply and inscribed: 'If you were going to leave, why didn't you say so? How vexing! —Though I could only know the home of Fujio's wife, at Fujishiro's in Senboku, if I had known...' The sentiment is as it may be, but the poem itself is truly delightful. If it were the age of the Man'yoshu, this too should be included in the anthology"—so it is written. In this passage, the Senboku of Dewa Province is mistakenly taken to be a Senboku in Oshu. I mention this in passing. In Mutsu Province, the deity Komagata no Kami is enshrined, and the deity Komagatane no Kami is also enshrined. Both are Shikinaisha (shrines listed in the Engishiki), and the sacred peak where these deities reside is called "Komagatake" or "Okomagatake," held in reverence by all. In the same province, in Isawa District near the Kamikawa River, there is also a Mount Komagata, but there appears to be no divine presence there. In former times, Hidehira no Ason planted a thousand cherry trees there, and when the blossoms fell in spring, they would drift and accumulate like white snow of flowers, making the mountain's form appear as if one were looking at a painting of a dappled horse (piebald), and so it was said to be a celebrated mountain in spring during that age. The sacred peak of Komagata is the divine mountain of Komagata, and toward the end of spring and the beginning of summer, when the snow melts in patches, the shape of a horse appears in the snow—it is from this that the mountain takes its name. Furthermore, in what is now Kamitsuno no Sho in Yamamoto District of Dewa Province, there is also a Komagatake, and this too— (continues)
