【Right Page】 【Main Text】 "Are you not being cowardly?" When Shibata said this, Yamakita replied: "I am not being cowardly. What of Furutō-dono Samanosuke (Minamoto no Yoshitomo), who fought the Taiken Gate battle against the Heike for three days and three nights, was defeated, and fell to Nagata's lodgings at Noma no Uchimi in Owari Province, where he was killed? Most likely, the followers of Hidehira of Ōshū, though few in number, took on all the military forces of Japan and fought well for thirty days" — he said this without any appearance of timidity. Shibata reported this to the lord (Yoritomo). The great general heard it and said: "This Yamakita speaks thus without even sparing his own life. What a splendid warrior!" He ordered, "Loosen their ropes," had them unbound, and as men of fine spirit, restored their lands to them as before — a most gracious thing. Yamakita no Jirō rejoiced greatly, and with tears wetting the sleeves of his armor, said "Not only have you spared my life, but with utmost gratitude and reverence, you have also restored my lands as before," and returned to his home province. And so from the winter of Bunji 5 (1189) to the autumn of Tenshō 18 (1590), for more than four hundred years, they governed their original domain and the family line continued — but when Toyotomi Hideyoshi laid siege to the Hōjō at Odawara in Sagami Province, Yamakita was gravely ill and could not take the field, so he sent his chief retainer as deputy. 【Left Page】 【Main Text】 The chief retainer was sent out. When the battle ended, because Yamakita-dono had not taken the field himself, he was exiled to the western provinces. His remaining lands were all given to the chief retainer. Thus having governed Senboku and Akita, around Keichō 7 (1602) there was a transfer of domain to Mutsu. It is said that the one known as Akita Jōsuke was a descendant of Yamakita-dono's chief retainer. Also, Hitachibō Kaison was still alive in the Senboku domain, but since he had grown senile, there was no one to talk to about the old days — so it was said. Also, in Kan'ei 7 (1630) Hitachibō died. He always kept a small box wrapped in bamboo skin, never leaving it off his person morning or evening, wearing it around his neck. After his death, when this was opened and examined, it was written in Yoshitsune's own hand with his seal, addressed "To Hitachibō," and so seeing this, everyone came to know for certain that he was indeed Hitachibō — and so on. This Seietsu Monogatari concerns the time around the Battle of the Koromo River in Isawa District of Mutsu Province: after all had died fighting in service of Hōgan Yoshitsune, only four survived — Seietsu (Koshirō, Kiyoetsu), Hitachibō, and two others among his close attendants. Seietsu had survived into this world until the summer of Kan'ei 7 and was at Hiraizumi — so it is said. Also, among the attendants of Gozōshi Uemon no Tayū there was a person called Ono Tazaemon. This Ono clan...
