【Right Page】 【Main Text】 From around Genna 2 (1616) until Genna 7 (1621), [someone] relied on Seietsu-bo as a teacher of military arts, attended him morning and evening, and wrote down in detail the events of the fall of Takadachi as heard from him day after day. This is that narrative. Within it, it states: On a certain occasion, the Lord of the Province, Middle Counselor Masamune, summoned Seietsu-bo and said, "I have heard that you have long survived in this world, and also that you possess a letter written by Lord Yoshitsune — might I not be permitted to view it?" Seietsu reverently bowed and immediately brought out a lacquered red box, pushed open the lid, and produced the document. He held it up and showed it to him. Middle Counselor Masamune descended from his seat, bowed his head, and viewed it with reverence. He also commanded those around him to view it as well, after which Seietsu quietly rolled it up and returned to his seat. When a domain was offered to Seietsu, he replied: "Though this command is deeply humbling, I have lived for many years in this world, and now being close to my final hour, what use could I make of a domain? That I have been able to dwell peacefully in Hiraizumi until now is itself what I regard as my lord's gracious favor and as my domain. That I cannot even offer this small measure of service in return..." And so it appeared that he would by no means accept the domain. After that, though summoned many times, 【Left Page】 the matter of the domain was never raised again, and so it appears in the text, and so forth. There is also an alternate version (in two volumes) of this Seietsu Monogatari. Seietsu's tomb is located near a village called Usukinu. Also, "Yamakita" is a very old name; in later times it appears as "Senboku" or "Senboku (仙乏)" in various forms. Furthermore, it is said that the grain document of Genta-ji was written by Yoshiie Ason at the direction of Kamakura Gongorō Kagemasa, and in that document "Senboku (仙乏)" appears. "Senfuku" also appears in the writings of the National Teacher Mujū, and on the sacred mirror of Sugi no Miya shrine. As for the longevity of Seietsu and Kaison, it is said that after fishing in the Koromogawa River and on their way home, they ate a food called "nimukamu" at a mountain hermit's dwelling, and this is what accounted for their long lives. Also, in a work called "Yoshitsune Ezo Gundan" (Yoshitsune's Ezo Military Tales), it is written at length how those who had been killed at Hiraizumi all secretly hid themselves and fled, crossing over to Ezo (Hokkaido). In that work, in the passage concerning "Hitachibon Kaison's encounter with Yoshitsune," it continues: "Yoshitsune returned to the main encampment, etc., set fire to the hall, and in the confusion of smoke secretly slipped out, intending to head toward Tsugaru to catch up with his lord. While passing through the Komagata mountain pass, he encountered a lone old man. The man's appearance was unusual and most remarkable. This stranger looked at the man and said, 'I shall teach you a certain art — follow me.' Though the man found this hard to comprehend, etc. The old man bestowed a scroll upon him, saying, etc., that he would gain arts of divine and wondrous transformation, etc." In the passage "Kaison further prevails and returns to Japan," it states: "Hitachibon Kaison, facing Yoshitsune, said, 'From this point I request my leave—
