時はよろつの事に通達して見通し
の辻法印のかん通よりすくれ通用
通屈（つうくつ）の自在（じざい）を得 通（つう）の又通ふう通
の帯より長き一通也今よりなんぢ
高慢（かうまん）斎と名乗り諸国安脚は先
さしをき近刻（きんこく）の絵双紙に眼（あなこ）をさら
すへしすべてゑさうしの作年〳〵
歳（せい）〳〵穴（あな）相似（あいに）たりその出来たる
をほめその不作をわらひ髪ゆひ床
や銭湯（せんとう）のむすこ株のうけがよいか又は
とのさまかみさまたち様から落た
おちの人若殿様の御意に入る歟
この大通のまき物は汝（なんち）がための
天眼通（てんがんつう）芝居世の頭取となつて
そのよしあしを定むへしほめるも
そしるも高が絵双紙とはいふものゝ
多くの本の名をよび出してかひに
来るたねともならば大きな板元の
仕合なるへし陰徳（いんとく）あれば陽報（やうはう）あり
ふたゝひ故郷へ立（たち）帰（かゑ）り錦（にしき）絵をひるかへせ
といふかと思へば夢さめてかたへに一つ
の巻物ありこれ大通の巻物ならん
大願（だいぐはん）成就（せうじゆ）かたじけないとぐつとのばし
た腕（うで）は伸（のび）大あくびして目をさませば
これも又夢にして火鉢にくへし
栗餅（あはもち）のまだやけぬ内に例のかし本屋
が門口からモウ評判記（ うはんき）は

現代語訳
時はよろずの事に通達して、見通しの辻法印の感通よりも優れ、通用・通屈の自在を得た「通」の又通、風通の帯より長き一通なり。今より汝、高慢斎と名乗り、諸国安脚はまず差し置き、近刻の絵草紙に眼をさらすべし。
すべて絵草紙の作は、年々歳々、穴が相似たり。その出来たるをほめ、その不作を笑い、髪結い床や銭湯の息子株の受けがよいか、又はご殿様・上様・旦那様方から落ちた落ちの人、若殿様のご意に入るか——この大通の巻物は汝がための天眼通。芝居世の頭取となって、そのよしあしを定むべし。
ほめるも、そしるも、高が絵草紙とはいうものの、多くの本の名を呼び出して買いに来る種ともなれば、大きな板元の仕合わせなるべし。陰徳あれば陽報あり。再び故郷へ立ち帰り、錦絵を翻せ。
と言うかと思えば夢が覚めて、傍らに一つの巻物あり。これ大通の巻物ならん。大願成就、かたじけないと、ぐっと伸ばした腕は伸び、大あくびをして目を覚ませば、これもまた夢にして、火鉢に加える栗餅（粟餅）のまだ焼けぬ内に、例の貸本屋が門口から、
「もう評判記は 明けましたか」

Having achieved mastery in all things, surpassing even the spiritual insight of the crossroads holy man's divine perception, and having obtained complete freedom in the ways of "tsū" (connoisseurship) — a scroll of "tsū" upon "tsū," of stylish "fūtsū," longer even than a fashionable sash — from this day forth, you shall call yourself Kōmansai, set aside traveling the provinces for now, and turn your eyes fully upon the illustrated booklets of recent publication.
The works of illustrated booklets, year after year, age after age, are full of familiar holes (tropes). Praise what succeeds, laugh at what fails — whether it finds favor with the sons of hairdressing shops and public bathhouses, or with those who have fallen from the grace of lords and masters, or whether it pleases the tastes of young lords — this scroll of the great connoisseur is your Heaven's Eye of Penetrating Vision. Become the director of the theater world and pass judgment on what is good and what is not.
Whether you praise or criticize, it is, after all, merely illustrated booklets — yet if calling out the names of many books draws people in to buy them, it shall surely be a great blessing for the major publishers. Where there is hidden virtue, there is manifest reward. Return once more to your homeland and spread the nishiki-e (brocade prints) far and wide.
Or so it seemed to say — when the dream broke, and there beside me lay a single scroll. Surely this must be the scroll of the great connoisseur. "Great wish fulfilled — how grateful I am!" As I stretched out my arm to reach for it, it extended — I let out a great yawn and opened my eyes, only to find this too was a dream. Before the mochi on the brazier had even finished cooking, the usual lending library man called from the front gate:
"Has the review booklet come out yet?"
