消（けさ）ざる故（ゆへ）に段〻（だん〳〵）と飛（とび）火｜家（いゑ）に移（うつ）りて火の勢（いきおひ）
さかんに成て土蔵（どぞう）財宝（ざいほう）まてやき失（うしな）ふ事ま
ことに〳〵｜歎（なけか）ヶ敷（はしき）事也｜故（ゆへ）に平生（つね）何（なに）事も
なきしづか成時に此｜理（ことはり）を能（よく）工夫（くふう）ありて
あらかじめ飛火を早く消す事｜肝要（かんよう）た

一 土蔵（どざう）なき人は塁地（らいち）の所へ土塀（どべい）を高（たか）さ
六尺ばかりにはゞは其家の家財（かざい）に応（おう）じ
二｜間（けん）か三｜間（げん）に両方に三四尺を折（おり）まげて拵（こしらへ）

て蔵（くら）のなき人は皆（みな）右の塀（へい）を相応（さうおう）にこしら
現代語訳
消さないために次第に飛び火が家に移って火の勢いが盛んになり、土蔵や財宝まで焼き失うことは、まことに嘆かわしいことである。だから普段、何事もない静かな時にこの理屈をよく工夫して、あらかじめ飛び火を早く消すことが肝要である。
一 土蔵がない人は空き地の所へ土塀を高さ六尺ほどに、幅はその家の家財に応じて二間か三間に、両方に三四尺を折り曲げて作っておく（割書：このように折り曲げて作るのである）。出火の際はその塀に押し付けて道具を重ねて、上に濡れ莚を隙間なく掛け、風が吹き立てないように綱で繋ぎ合わせ、たびたび水を掛けるべきである。場所も取らず土蔵の代わりによいものである。並べて置くよりも収まりもよく、盗人の用心にもよい。上方また西国で蔵のない人は皆この塀を相応に作って

Because they fail to extinguish [the sparks], the flying sparks gradually spread from house to house, the fire's intensity grows fierce, and even storehouses and treasures are burned and lost—this is truly a most lamentable thing. Therefore, during ordinary peaceful times when nothing is happening, one should carefully study this principle and make it essential to extinguish flying sparks quickly in advance.
One [method]: People without storehouses should build an earth wall in an empty lot, about six shaku high, with a width of two or three ken according to their household goods, with both sides bent three or four shaku to form corners (marginal note: bend and construct it like this). During a fire, press [goods] against that wall, stack tools there, cover the top completely with wet mats without gaps, tie them together with rope so the wind cannot blow them up, and frequently pour water over them. This takes up little space and serves well as a substitute for a storehouse. It provides better organization than simply lining things up and is also good protection against thieves. In the Kamigata region and western provinces, people without storehouses all construct such walls appropriately.
