かさねゆくは道にてせり合か急（きふ）にやけ
来る時には精力（せいりき）つきて命（いのち）にかへべき
やうなければ是非（ぜひ）なく打（うち）すてゝ逃去（にげさる）事

（前頁より続き）重ねて行けば、道で（他の人と）せり合いになるか、急に火が迫ってきた時には精力が尽きて、命と引き換えにするほどのことでもないのに、是非なく打ち捨てて逃げ去ることが、数度見聞きしたことである。特に、女性や子どもなどに引かせる場合はなおさらのこと、心得て軽くまとめて入れ、ただせり合いにならないうちに早く持ち去ることが肝要なことである。
一、車長持も持たず、きわめて貧しい人は、常にこのような紙帳を近くに置き、急な火事の際にはそれに物を入れて、力の弱い人は筵（むしろ）に乗せて引き出すべきである。また、薄縁（うすべり）の小口を切り裂いてかます（袋）とし、物を入れて、これも持ち出せるものである。持ち出しにくい物は筵に乗せて引き出すべきである。いずれも早業で、勝手よく使えるものである。あらかじめ心得ておくべきことである。

This has been witnessed and heard of on numerous occasions. Particularly when women and children are made to pull the chest, it is all the more important to bear this in mind: pack it lightly, and above all, move it away quickly before getting caught in the crush. This is a matter of the utmost importance.
1. For those who do not own a wheeled long chest and are extremely poor: always keep a paper mosquito net (*shichō*) nearby, and in the event of a sudden fire, place items into it. Those who are not strong enough can place it on a straw mat (*mushiro*) and drag it out. Alternatively, one can cut open the edge of a thin rush mat (*usuberi*) to make a sack, put things into it, and carry that away as well. Items that are difficult to carry can be placed on a straw mat and dragged out. Either method is quick and easy to manage. These are things one should know in advance.
