わりに気を付（つけ）火の移（うつ）りやすき物をば

現代語訳
（前頁より続き）また割れ目があるものである。それゆえ、火を焚く時には周りに気を付け、火が移りやすい物は取り除き、もし壁際であれば、その隙間へたびたび水をかけるべきである。竈からの出火は、数度聞き及び、私（著者）も覚えがあるので、記しておくのである。よくよく気を付けて、油断があってはならないことである。
夜中に綿を打つ時、弓弦が切れて飛び、灯火を打ち倒し、その火が綿に移って火災となることが、しばしば多くある。それを防ぐには、あらかじめ筵か薄縁を二、三枚近くに置き、（火が燃え移ったら）早く打ちかけて消すべきことである。
一、唐油合羽・たばこ入れ、総じて油を引いた物を、日に干してまだ冷めないうちに包み込んでしまうと、必ず火気（自然発火）となって燃え出るものである。早く濡れ筵を打ちかけ、押しつけて消すべきである。これまたいずこでも時々あることであれば、よく冷ましてから（包むべきである）。

Therefore, when lighting a fire, pay close attention to the surroundings, remove anything that might easily catch fire, and if the stove is near a wall, frequently splash water into the gap between them. Fires originating from stoves have been heard of on numerous occasions, and the author himself has personal recollection of such cases, which is why this is recorded here. One must take great care and never be negligent in this matter.
When beating cotton late at night, the bowstring may snap and fly off, knocking over a lamp; the flame can then spread to the cotton and cause a fire. This happens quite frequently. To prevent this, one should keep two or three straw mats (*mushiro*) or thin rush mats (*usuberi*) nearby in advance, so that one can quickly throw them over any flame and smother it.
1. Oilskin raincoats (*tōyu kappa*), tobacco pouches, and all objects that have been treated or coated with oil — if they are packed away while still warm from sun-drying, they will invariably generate heat and spontaneously combust. One should quickly throw a wet straw mat over them, press it down firmly, and extinguish the fire. As this too occurs from time to time in various places, one should always cool such items thoroughly before putting them away.
