現代語訳
（前頁より続き）火を打ち付けて使用し、そのまま火打ち箱を棚の上に置いておくことをしてはならない。あの火口（ほくち）から自然と燃え出して、棚から壁へ燃え移る時には、隣家と自家の区別もなくなって、知らぬ間に（出火元を巡って）争うことになるのである。それゆえ、火打ち箱は古くなったら新しくすべきである。箱は桐か栗の板で作るべきである。また、火口入れの内側を金属板（板金）で張っておけば、それ以降の火災はまず起こらないことである。このことをよく考えて、何よりも大切にすべきことである。
一、在郷・町を問わず、また貧しい者や独り者などが、松葉・木の葉・鉋屑（かんなくず）の類を焚きかけのままにして、不意に外へ出てしまい、火災となる事例もまた、これまで幾度もあったことである。かねてより心得ておいて、その焚き物のある場所から引き離して焚くべきである。（燃料を）容器に取り分けて持ち来て、置いて焚く時には、たとえ火を焚きさしにして外に出たとしても、火の燃え移るべき筋（燃料となるもの）が（以下次頁へ続く）

(Continued from previous page) — one should never strike a fire and then leave the fire-striking box (*hiuchi-bako*) sitting on a shelf as it is. When the tinder (*hokuchi*) inside naturally catches and the fire spreads from the shelf to the wall, the distinction between one's own property and that of one's neighbor is lost, and disputes over the cause arise before anyone realizes what has happened. Therefore, fire-striking boxes should be replaced with new ones when they become old. The boxes should be made of paulownia (*kiri*) or chestnut (*kuri*) board. Furthermore, if the interior of the tinder compartment is lined with sheet metal (*itakane*), fires originating from it will be extremely unlikely ever after. Reflecting carefully on this matter, it should be treated as more important than anything else.

Regardless of whether one lives in the countryside or in town, cases of fire breaking out when poor persons or those living alone kindle pine needles, fallen leaves, wood shavings, or the like, and then suddenly step outside leaving the fire unattended — such incidents have also occurred numerous times in the past. One should be mindful of this in advance, and should kindle fires at a remove from any such combustible materials.
