事とてかくすより大事（たいじ）となる物なれば平

現代語訳
（前頁より続き）わずかなことだからといって隠すより、大事（おおごと）となるものであるから、日頃から近所の人々と申し合わせておき、鳴り物を打ち鳴らして、互いに力を合わせるべきことである。
一、祝儀ならびに普請（建築工事）、あるいは葬儀等、総じて家内の者が疲れている時は、主人・家来の者は夜中、特にあちらこちらへ気を配り、出火・盗人への用心を怠ってはならないことである。
一、落雷による火に水をかけると、かえって火が盛んになるものである。素早くこちらから燃えている火をさらに加えれば、すなわち（火は）鎮まるものである。かねてより心得ておくべきことである。
一、革（かわ）装束の代わりに用いて効果のあるものは、地質の良い木綿一反に、明礬（みょうばん）一斤を水二升に入れて一升になるまで煎じ、冷ましておき、豆の粉をすりたてよく漉して五合を加え、温めて何度も（布に）引き干して、羽織・頭巾・た（次頁へ続く）

1. During celebrations, construction work, funerals, or any occasion when members of the household are exhausted, the master and servants must take special care throughout the night, remaining vigilant in all directions, and must not be negligent in guarding against fire and burglars.
1. If water is thrown onto a fire caused by a lightning strike, the fire will on the contrary burn more vigorously. If one quickly adds further fire from one's own side to the burning fire, it will immediately be suppressed. One should bear this in mind in advance.

A good substitute for leather (*kawa*) fire-protective garments is made as follows: take one *tan* of good-quality cotton cloth, add one *kin* of alum (*myōban*) to two *shō* of water, and boil it down to one *shō*; allow it to cool, then grind soybean flour, strain it thoroughly, add five *gō* of the strained liquid, warm it, and repeatedly draw the cloth through the mixture and dry it.
