(Continued from previous page) — one should have people carry water buckets (*mizu-oke*), sickles (*kama*), rakes (*kumade*), and fire hooks (*tobiguchi*) when going. Staffs and poles (*bō*) are of no use. The sickles and rakes are for pulling objects out from within the fire, and it should be known that the spike at the tip of the fire hook is for use as a walking stick when working atop a roof. **List of items to be prepared:** - Ladders (*hashigo*): [prepare as many as the number of buildings] - Well-buckets (*tsurube*): [two, with ropes attached] - Water brooms (*mizu-bōki*): [in proportion to the number of buildings] - Hand buckets (*te-oke*): [it is good to place these inside the well-buckets] - Large fans (*ō-uchiwa*): [likewise, in proportion to the number of buildings] - Ladles (*hishaku*): [likewise to be placed inside the well-buckets; small ones, or even bowls, will do] - Water deflectors (*mizu-hajiki*): [likewise, in proportion to the number of buildings] - Hoe-clogs (*kuwa-ashida*): [good for getting to fire sites quickly] - Large lanterns (*ō-chōchin*): [affix a label in advance to the place where they are to be hung] - Thin ropes (*hosohiki*): [one per person, for all members of the household] - Fresh daikon radishes (*nama-daikon*): [each person should carry one] - Sandbags (*dohyō*): [enough to fill each pathway] - Dried cooked rice (*hoshii*) or frozen rice cakes (*kōrimochi*): [pack into small pouches; prepare more than the number of household members in advance, so that each person may carry some in the event of a sudden fire] Beyond the above, each person should prepare whatever items they are familiar with and find convenient for firefighting and fire prevention. What is recorded here represents the extent of this author's own thinking on the matter. The articles set forth above are based on what has commonly been heard, as well as on experience gained from fires on numerous occasions... (continues on next page)
