有之を取あつめそこはかとなく書（かき）記（しる）して子孫（しそん）
に伝（つた）へ教（おしゆ）るものなり火事は災難（さいなん）の内一しほ

（前頁より続き）…経験したことを集めて、とりとめなく書き記し、子孫に伝え教えるものである。火事は災難の中でもひとしお重大な事であるから、十分に昼夜を問わず大切に用心すべきことである。天下国家の騒ぎであり、また人のためにも自分のためにもなることであるから、毎月二、三度もこの一冊を家内の者によく読み聞かせ、納得させて、人にも教え、平生油断なく、出火の際にはとりわけ親しい者も疎遠な者も隔てなく、真心をもって速やかに防ぐべきである。
その善行の功徳は計り知れないであろう。もし大火に及ぶ時には、いく万人もの人が悲しみ、また財宝の損失もいかほどであろうか。ゆえに火事といえば、自分の髪に火がついた時の炎を救うかのように、真剣に防ぐべきである。そうすれば神明にも通じ、天道の助けを得られることは疑いのないことである。

(Continued from previous page) — gathered together what has been experienced, and set it down in writing without particular order, so as to pass it on and teach it to one's descendants. Fire is a disaster of the gravest weight among all calamities, and therefore one must at all times, day and night, take every possible care and precaution. It is a matter that disturbs the realm and the nation at large, and yet it is also something that concerns both others and oneself personally. Therefore, this single volume should be read aloud to all members of the household two or three times each month, so that they may fully understand it; it should also be taught to others; and one must never be negligent in ordinary times. When a fire breaks out, one must with particular sincerity and speed work to suppress it, making no distinction whatsoever between those close to oneself and those more distant.
The merit of such good deeds shall be without limit. Should a great fire occur, how many tens of thousands of people would grieve, and how immeasurable would be the loss of treasures and property. Therefore, when the word "fire" is spoken, one must fight to prevent it with genuine resolve — as though extinguishing a flame that has caught upon one's own hair. If one does so, it is beyond all doubt that this will reach the gods (*shinmei*) and that one will receive the aid of Heaven (*tendō*).
