As soon as the fire has subsided, run over, put on the clogs, take up the hoe, and first clear away the area on top of the underground storage (anagura). For a earthen storehouse (dozō), examine the wall on the side exposed to the fire; if there is fire heat present, quickly pour large amounts of water from the roof down to the wall, and only when the water no longer dries up at all should the earthen door be quietly opened. If it is opened too quickly without this precaution, the fire heat within the walls will penetrate inside, and when wind from outside reaches what has been smoldering within, it will surely burst into flame. This, too, is something learned through repeated experience. One must take the greatest care in this matter.
One item: During a fire, it is good for everyone to carry a raw daikon radish. When your throat becomes parched and you are choking from smoke, eating it is most beneficial. For burns, grate and apply it directly. Alternatively, sugar boiled down to a thick concentration may be applied. Persimmon tannin (kakishibu) is also effective. Furthermore, the powdered bark of the Amur cork tree (kihada) mixed with oil...
