## Report of Rumors (Fūsetsu-gaki) Concerning one Shimada-dono, a retainer of the Kujō household, who was reportedly residing in the Sakaichō Marutake-sagaru area of Kyoto. For some reason, it had become difficult for him to remain at home during this period, and rumors had been widely circulating that he had left his residence and his whereabouts were unknown. Then, on the morning of the 22nd, a headless corpse was discovered in the Takase River, below the Nijō intersection. According to accounts, Shimada-dono had been hiding near the Takase River below Nijō when, around the first watch of the previous night (approximately 7–8 p.m.), a group of five unknown individuals forced their way in — three through the front entrance and two around to the rear. Shimada-dono fled toward the rear but was seized and dragged to the Takase River, where he was cut down and killed. The head appeared to have been severed from both sides, one arm was missing, and there were cross-shaped (*jūmonji*) slash wounds across his back. On the 23rd, two officials (*otsuké*) from the Town Magistrate's office attended as inspectors (*kenshi*). As a result of this incident, it is rumored that the Kujō household is in a state of great turmoil and confusion. --- Item: On the morning of this 23rd day, at a riverbank approximately three to four *ken* to the east of Pontochō, above the Shijō intersection on the eastern bank of the river, a head was found mounted on green bamboo… *(Continues on the following page)*
