## (Continued from previous page)
A single head had been impaled upon a green bamboo stave, and on a board placed beside it, the following was written:
> "This man, Shimada Sahyōe Gondaifu, conspired with the great rebel Nagano Shūzen, devised schemes utterly without reason, and is a treacherous villain whom even Heaven and Earth cannot suffer. He is therefore hereby condemned to be exposed as a severed head (*kyōshu*)."
The inscription was as written above, and spectators gathered like a mountain — the rumors and clamor were enormous. From early morning until around eight o'clock, the head remained as it was; it was only around that hour that it was finally wrapped in a straw mat (*mushiro*), placed in a basket, and removed.
Note: Nagano Shūzen was a retainer (*kachū*) of the Hikone domain.

## 2nd Day of the 8th Month
In the morning, the following was written on a horizontal board affixed before the Nishiki Tenjin shrine in Kyoto:
> "On the 23rd day of the 7th month, the heavenly troops (*tenpei*), borrowing the hands of loyal and courageous men for the sake of the nation, struck down the great villainous traitor Shimada and exposed his head. All who saw it clapped their hands in joy and cried out in satisfaction. What is further to be lamented is that the people were not allowed to saw at him with a bamboo saw. Beyond this, one can only pray that the chief architect of great evil, Nagano [Shūzen], will meet his end, be buried in the earth, and that the people of the nation will be permitted to grate him down with a wasabi grater."

## 11th Day of the 7th Month
A posted notice (*harigami*) was found at the Kyoto Shoshidai residence:
> "Since the salt-goods merchant (*Ii Naosuke*) has changed his shift, the greengrocer (*the Shogun*) will be coming again."
(Summary verse)
> The torso drifted down past Nijō and Sanjō; the head met it at Shijō — together they make a spectacle of shame for the Kujō (household).
>
> The clear waters at the very center of Shijō in Kyoto have become the foremost place in all Japan for displaying disgrace.
>
> What a flashy style — the *shimada* topknot elaborately dressed, with a bamboo skewer thrust through the severed head as a hairpin.
