*(Continued from previous page)* …and therefore, even if one must run about in the event of a disturbance, one's feet will not be injured. Moreover, because the woolen cloth (*rasha*) is black, even if blood is shed it cannot be seen, minor hand wounds go entirely unnoticed, and one's fighting spirit does not falter — so it is said.
Item: Japanese hand firearms are unsuitable. At the present time in America, a gun called the "Breech-loading Rifle" (*Burīke Rōtenōnku Raifuru*) has been invented and is exclusively in use. It is capable of firing twenty-five rounds per minute, or even more. One simply takes a cartridge (*hayago*) from the cartridge box (*dōran*), pushes it into the barrel from the front, and cocks the percussion cap (*keitō* — lit. "rooster's head"); the end of the cartridge breaks open of its own accord, the bottom of the barrel is sealed with an iron plate, the touchhole is covered by the percussion cap mechanism, and one need only aim directly at the enemy and pull the trigger. Nothing is more convenient and simple than this.
Because there is presently a war in America, the price of this rifle is sixty-five *mai* (coins/ryō). Firearms of the Japanese type are sold in San Francisco for as little as one and a half *mai*, and are available for purchase in mountainous quantities. If one wishes to have this rifle manufactured [domestically] quickly, one should wait forty-five days. In the meantime, it should be procured from America and given to Sasaki — so it is said.
Item: The "Pistol" (*Hisutōru*) was also invented in America last year in the first month of spring (*mōshun*), and it is said that since then, revolvers of the five- or six-barrel (*karami*) type will become obsolete. This firearm, it is said, discharges any number of bullets from the underside of the barrel.
