One item: At this time of year, the sun comes almost directly overhead (to the zenith) here. On land, one can see fireflies glowing at night and hear the sounds of insects — things one would normally observe all at once during a single autumn season in Japan. One item: On the 20th of the same month, we departed from that place (Singapore), and on the 29th of the same month arrived at Galle (コール, *Kōru*) on the island of Ceylon in the central Indian Ocean. (Name of the port; situated at approximately 6 degrees north latitude and 80 degrees east longitude.) This area is said to be near the birthplace of the Buddha, and even today Buddhist practitioners (*Shakushi*) remain here, and the people resemble those of our country. Since yesterday, the 29th, I have gone ashore and am lodging at an inn. The daytime heat reaches 83 or 84 degrees (Fahrenheit). I had heard that we would depart tomorrow, when I suddenly learned that an official letter (御用状) was to be sent, and so, as requested, I am writing this while still standing. More than twenty days from now, we will cross the narrow passage (the Suez region) connecting the Red Sea to the west and the Mediterranean, and we are scheduled to arrive first in France around the middle of the 3rd month. The exact itinerary is not yet clear. Members of the mission are frequently urging a speedy return, so we will likely return to Japan by the end of this year or in early spring of next year. One item: Regarding the war between the North and the South in America (the American Civil War), please refer to the recent newspapers and form your own judgment by considering the context before and after. One item: It is said that because (Southern forces) seized a messenger sent by the North to solicit the assistance of the Dutch (*Kōmō*; i.e., Britain), Britain became incensed and may dispatch troops. One item: Just before entering port at Singapore the other day, there was a sudden instance of loading cannonballs aboard the ship. This was due to the matter mentioned above (the American Civil War); depending on the situation, there was concern that American warships might be present at that location and might initiate hostilities. However, in the end, nothing occurred. One item: There will surely be many remarkable events during our travels through the countries of Europe. I shall report everything in detail afterward. I pray for your continued protection at all times. After reading this letter, please pass it along to [name redacted], and I would be grateful if you could also let the people of my household know of its contents. I am fortunately in good health, and I am deeply moved by and grateful for your esteemed influence and support. However, this journey differs from the previous one in that our party is small, and as a result the various duties are heavy, and so many things come to my eyes and ears that I find almost no time to write them down — I am quite at a loss. For now, I have conveyed only a general outline. Written in haste, with deep respect.
