をいふに。其いふ所に少しも爽（たかは）ずとて。上手なりと
こと〴〵しく信ずべからず。村叟（いなかおやじ）野嫗（いなかばゝ）も痘瘡に馴（なれ）
たるものは。吉凶をしりて医者にまされることをいふ
ことあり。且（さて）近比ある痘科（はうさうい）が。三歳になる児の痘瘡
に朝鮮人参（てふせんにんじん）を一日に四五匁づゝ飲せしよし我聞
り。かくいとけなきものに人参はいふまてもなし。

養うべきである。また世間には予防薬が数多くあるが、決して惑わされてはならない。久吾聶が言うには、私の男女の子供が十人いる。試しに予め解毒の薬を用いた者が六人、その痘瘡はかえって重かった。薬を用いなかった者が四人、その痘瘡はかえって軽かった。これによって分かった。予め解毒する薬はみな脾胃を傷める薬であって、害があって益がないと言っている。これらを見て、痘瘡は医薬を頼みにすべきではない。決まった日数が過ぎさえすれば、自然に治るという道理を

よく心得るべきである。数多く取り扱った医者は、吉凶の経過を言うのに、その言う通りに少しも違わないからといって、上手だと大げさに信じてはならない。田舎の老人や老婆も痘瘡に慣れた者は、吉凶を知って医者に勝ることを言うことがある。さて近頃、ある痘瘡専門医が三歳になる児の痘瘡に朝鮮人参を一日に四、五匁ずつ飲ませたと私は聞いた。このような幼い者に人参は言うまでもなく不適切である。諸薬といえども一日に四、五匁用いることはあるべきこととも思

One should nurture [the patient's spirit]. Also, there are numerous preventive medicines in the world, but one must never be misled by them. Kyūgo-zeu said: I have ten children, both boys and girls. As an experiment, six of them used preventive antidotes, and their smallpox was actually severe. Four did not use medicine, and their smallpox was actually mild. From this I learned that preventive antidotes are all medicines that damage the spleen and stomach, causing harm with no benefit. Seeing these cases, one should not rely on medicine for smallpox. One should well understand the principle that once the fixed period passes, it naturally heals.

Even country old men and old women who are experienced with smallpox sometimes know about favorable and unfavorable outcomes and say things that surpass doctors. Now, recently I heard that a certain smallpox specialist made a three-year-old child with smallpox drink four to five monme of Korean ginseng per day.
