内々（ない〳〵）に此病あり。されども面（かほ）には紅粉（べにおしろい）を粧（よそほ）ひ。外貌（かほかたち）
にてはさらに病妓（かさかき）とみえず。まことにばけものと
いふべし。すでに妖（ばけもの）といふ字（じ）は。夭（わか）き女（おんな）の二字を。一字と
せしなり。豈（あに）おそるべきにあらずや
○此病の症候（わづらひやう）いくばくといふことなし。はじめは
みな下疳（げかん）便毒（べんどく）よりおこる。これこの病の苗芽（なへめだし）なり。
古語（こゞ）に苗芽（めうげ）にして去（さら）ざれば。ついには斧柯（おのまさかり）を用ひんと
すといへり。樹木（じゆもく）の類も苗（なへ）のときにはさりやすし。

大木（たいぼく）になりては去（さり）がたきをいふなり。されば下疳（らやく）
便毒（よこね）は痼疾（ほねがらみ）癈人（かたわ）となるの苗芽（なへめだし）なりとおそれて。
良医（よきいし）を聞（きゝ）たゞして療治をうけ。心（こゝろ）ながく服薬（ふくやく）
すべし。若人（わかうど）はとかくにはやくいやさんと速功（そくこう）のみを
いそげとも。此病にかぎり一朝（いつてふ）一夕（いつせき）にはいへず。てまどる
ものぞかし。豪家（あきびと）の倉廩（くら）を建（たて）るがごとくに。日数（ひかず）を
へずしては。いゑがたしと心得べし。
○此病の一名を恥瘡（はぢがさ）といふ。はじめ下疳便毒の
現代語訳

内々にこの病気を患っている。しかし顔には紅白粉を施し、外見
では全く病気の遊女とは見えない。まことに化け物と
いうべきである。すでに妖という字は、夭（若い）と女の二字を一字と
したものである。どうして恐れないでいられようか。
○この病気の症状は数え切れないほどである。初めは
みな下疳や便毒から起こる。これがこの病気の芽生えである。
古い言葉に「芽のうちに取り去らなければ、ついには斧や鉞を用いることになる」と
言われている。樹木の類も苗の時には除去しやすい。

大木になってしまっては除去しがたいということである。だから下疳や
便毒は慢性疾患や廃人となる芽生えであると恐れて、
良医を探し求めて治療を受け、気長に服薬
すべきである。若者はとかく早く治そうと即効性ばかりを
急いでも、この病気に限っては一朝一夕には治らない。手間取る
ものなのである。富豪が倉庫を建てるように、日数を
かけずしては治りがたいと心得るべきである。
○この病気の別名を恥瘡という。初めに下疳や便毒の

this disease alone cannot be cured overnight. It is something that takes time
and effort. Like a wealthy merchant building a warehouse, one must understand that
without spending considerable time, it cannot be cured.
