しかも、遊び戯れる者の当意即妙な様、色を好む者の粋な様、腰の立たない老人の弱々しい様、猿回しの様、幼子を背負う様、男性の様、車を引く人、船を漕ぐ男、馬の口取り、女中、腹部按摩師、中間、小者、紺屋、檜皮葺き職人、陰陽師、木こり、海女、相撲取り、髪を洗う様、髪を結う様、送る様、眠る様など、様々な姿形や雰囲気が、さながら生きて働いているかのように思われる。この絵師は誰かと問うに、この頃の上手として

Moreover, the quick-witted manner of those at play, the refined way of pleasure-seekers, the frail appearance of elderly people whose legs can no longer support them, monkey trainers, those carrying small children on their backs, men, people pulling carts, men rowing boats, horse grooms, female servants, abdominal massage therapists, servants, laborers, indigo dyers, cypress bark roofers, yin-yang masters, woodcutters, female divers, sumo wrestlers, the manner of washing hair, of arranging hair, of seeing someone off, of sleeping—all these various forms and atmospheres seem as if they are truly alive and working. When one asks who this artist is, [he is known] as a master of these times...
