名高い北斎翁なのであった。まことに、この人の絵を求めようとして、あちこちから押し寄せて尋ねて来る人は、多くの星が北極星に向かうが如く、また葛飾早稲の田を渡る風になびくのと同じことである。自分は年を取り、髪も白くなって物好きも世間の人に劣るようになったが、ただこの画家の絵を見詳しく眺めれば、「ああ見事だ、ああ面白い」と、いつまでも笑みを浮かべて賞賛し、興じることは、なお若々しい人に劣らない。そうであれば、我が心も昔と同じなのであろう。これもまた大いに老いていないということなのだろう。せめて

Indeed, people who seek this man's art come crowding and inquiring from all directions, like the many stars turning toward the North Star, or like the wind that blows across the early rice fields of Katsushika, bending them in unison. Though I have aged, my hair has whitened, and my enthusiasm for such things has declined compared to other people in the world, when I examine this master's paintings in detail, I cannot help but exclaim "Ah, how magnificent!
