翁をいとおしく悲しいと思っていた気持ちも消えてしまった。この衣を着た人は物思いがなくなってしまったので、車に乗って百人ほどの天人を連れて昇っていった。その後、翁と嫗は涙を流して嘆いたけれども甲斐がない。あの残していった文を読んで聞かせたけれども、「何のために命が惜しかろうか。誰のために何事も用はないのだ」と言って、薬も食べず、やすらかに寝ることもなく明け暮れて病み伏せっている。中将は人々を引き連れて帰参して、かぐや姫を得ることも叶わず、引き留めることもできなかったことを詳しく奏上する。薬の壺にお手紙を添えて参上する。（帝は）それを広げてご覧になって
