いとあはれからせ給ひて物もきこしめさす
御あそひなどもなかりけりだいじん上達部（かんたちめ）を
め□【「し」ヵ】ていつれの山か天にちかきとゝはせ給ふ
にある人そうすするかの国にあるなる山なん
此都もちかく天もちかく侍るとそうすこれを
きかせたまひて
あうこともなみたにうかふ我身には
しなぬくすりも何にかはせん
かの奉る不死のくすりに又つほくして御使に
給はすちよくしには月のいはかさといふ人
を召てするかの国にあなる山のいたゝきにもて

たいそう哀れにお思いになって、お食事も召し上がらず、管弦の遊びなども行われなかった。大臣や上達部を召して、「どの山が天に最も近いか」とお尋ねになる。ある人が奏上するには、「駿河の国にある山が、この都にも近く、天にも近く侍ります」と申し上げる。これをお聞きになって、
逢うこともなみだに浮かぶ我が身には
死なぬ薬も何にかはせん
かぐや姫が奉った不死の薬にまた壺を添えて、御使いにお与えになる。勅使には「月のいわかさ」という人を召して、駿河の国にあるという山の頂上に持って

He was deeply moved to pity and neither partook of meals nor engaged in musical entertainments. Summoning the ministers and senior courtiers, he asked, "Which mountain is closest to heaven?" Someone replied in audience that "the mountain in Suruga Province is both close to this capital and close to heaven, Your Majesty." Upon hearing this, he composed:
Even for one whose body floats in tears
Unable to meet her again,
What use is a medicine that prevents death?
He added a jar to the elixir of immortality that Princess Kaguya had presented, and bestowed it upon an imperial messenger. As the imperial envoy, he summoned a person called "Tsuki no Iwakasa" to carry it to the summit of the mountain in Suruga Province.
