といへはへんけの人といふとも女の身もち
給へりおきなのあらんかきりはかうて【こうして】もい
ませかしこの人々の年月をへてかうのみい
ましつゝのたまふ事を思ひ定めてひとり〳〵
にあひ給へやといへはかくやひめいはく能も
あらぬかたちをふかき心もしらてあた心つき
なはのちくやしき事も有べきをとおもふ
はかりなり世のかしこき人なりともふかき心
さしをしらてはあいかたしとなんおもふといふ
おきないはく思ひのことくもの給ふかなそも
〳〵いかやうなるこゝろさしあらん人にか
現代語訳
と言えば、「変化の人と言っても女の身を持っていらっしゃいます。翁のある限りはこうしていらしてください。この人々が年月を経てこのようにばかりいらして、おっしゃることを思い定めて、一人ずつにお逢いになってください」と言えば、かぐや姫は言う。「能もない容貌を、深い心も知らずに、浮気心がついてしまえば、後で悔しいこともあるだろうと思うばかりです。世の賢い人であっても、深い心志を知らずには、逢うのは難しいと思います」と言う。翁は言う。「思いの通りにおっしゃることですね。そもそもいかなる心志のある人にでしょうか」
英語訳
When she said this, [he replied], "Even if you are a supernatural being, you possess the body of a woman. As long as this old man lives, please remain like this. These people have come for years and months, always saying the same things. Please consider what they say and meet with them one by one." Then Princess Kaguya said, "I have no special talents or beauty, and if I were to meet them without knowing their deep hearts, and if fickleness should arise, there would surely be regrettable consequences later - this is all I think about. Even if they are wise people of this world, I think it would be difficult to meet with them without knowing their profound intentions." The old man said, "You speak just as you think. But what kind of heart and intentions should such a person have?"
