いはくかたしけなくきたなけ成ところに年
月をへてものし給ふ【いらっしゃる】事ありかたくかしこま
ると申おきなの命けふあすともしらぬをか
くの給ふ君達にもよく思ひさためてつかうま
つれと申もことはりなりいつれもをとりまさ
りおはしまさねは御心さしの程はみゆへし
つかうまつらん事はそれになんさたむへき
といへはこれ能事【成し遂げなければならないことがら】也人のうらみもあるまし
といふ五人の人々も能事なりといへはおきな
いりていふかくやひめ石つくり御子には佛
の御石のはちといふ物ありそれを取て給へと

言うには「恐れ多くも汚らわしい所に年月を経ていらっしゃることは有り難く、恐縮に存じます」と申す。翁の命は今日明日とも知れないのに、このようにおっしゃる君達にもよく思い定めてお仕え申し上げよと申すのももっともなことです。いずれもお劣りになることはございませんので、御心志のほどを見るべきでしょう。お仕え申し上げることは、それによって決めるべきでしょう」と言えば「これはよいことだ。人の恨みもあるまい」と言う。五人の人々も「よいことだ」と言えば、翁は入っていって言う「かぐや姫よ、石作皇子には仏の御石の鉢というものがある。それを取ってきてくださいと

[The old man] said: "It is most gracious and humbling that you have honored this humble and unworthy place with your presence for months and years." The old man said that since his life could end any day, it was reasonable to tell these noble gentlemen who speak thus to think carefully and serve [the princess]. "Since none of you is inferior to the others, the degree of your heart's devotion should be made evident. The matter of serving [the princess] should be decided accordingly."
