いふくらもちの御子には東の海にほうらいと
云山あるなりそれにしろかねをねとしこかね
をくきとし白き玉をみとしてたてる木あり
それ一えたおりてたまはらんといふ今ひとり
にはもろこしに有火ねすみのかはきぬを給へ
大伴の大納言にはたつのくひに五色にひかる
玉ありそれを取てたまへいそのかみの中納言
にはつはくらめのもたるこやすの貝取て給へ
といふおきなかたき事にこそあなれ此国に
有ものにもあらすかくかたき事をはいかに申
さんといふかくやひめなにかかたからんといへ
現代語訳
言う。「蔵持皇子には、東の海に蓬莱という山があるそうです。そこに白銀を根とし、黄金を茎とし、白い玉を実として立っている木があります。それを一枝折って差し上げてくださいと言いなさい。もう一人には、唐土にある火鼠の皮衣を差し上げてくださいと言いなさい。大伴大納言には、龍の首に五色に光る玉があります。それを取って差し上げてくださいと言いなさい。石上中納言には、燕の持っている子安の貝を取って差し上げてくださいと言いなさい」と言う。翁は「難しいことであるようですね。この国にあるものでもありませんし、このような難しいことをどのように申し上げましょうか」と言う。かぐや姫は「何が難しいでしょうか」と言った。

[The old man continued:] "Tell Prince Kuramochi that there is a mountain called Hōrai in the eastern sea. There stands a tree with roots of silver, a trunk of gold, and bearing white jewels as fruit. Tell him to break off one branch and bring it to you. To another, tell him to bring the fire-rat's fur robe that exists in China. Tell the Great Counselor Ōtomo that there is a jewel that shines in five colors on a dragon's neck. Tell him to obtain that. Tell Middle Counselor Isonokami to obtain the cowrie shell of easy childbirth that swallows possess." The old man said, "These seem to be difficult tasks indeed. They are not things that exist in this country, so how shall I convey such difficult requests?" Princess Kaguya said, "What is difficult about them?"
