て三年はかり大和の国とをちのこほりにある
山寺にひんする【賓頭盧】のまへ【前】なるはちのひたくろに
すみ【墨】つきたるをとりてにしきのふくろに入て
つくり花のえたにつけてかくやひめの家に
もてきて見せけれはかくやひめあやしかりて
みれははちの中に文ありひろけて見れは
うみ山のみちに心をつくしはてないしのはち
の涙なかれけかくやひめひかりや有と見るに
ほたるはかりのひかりたになし
をくつゆのひかりをたにもやとさまし
おくらの山にてなにもとめけん
現代語訳
そして三年ほど、大和の国十市郡にある山寺の賓頭盧の前にある鉢の真っ黒に墨のついたものを取って、錦の袋に入れて作り花の枝につけて、かぐや姫の家に持って来て見せたところ、かぐや姫は怪しく思って見ると、鉢の中に文があった。広げて見ると、
「海山の道に心を尽くし果て ない石の鉢の涙流れけ」
かぐや姫は光があるかと見るが、蛍ほどの光すらもない。
「置く露の光をだにもやどさまし おくらの山にて何求めけん」
英語訳
And for about three years, he took a pitch-black bowl covered with soot from in front of the Binzuru statue at a mountain temple in Tōchi district of Yamato Province, put it in a brocade bag, attached it to an artificial flower branch, and brought it to Princess Kaguya's house to show her. Princess Kaguya found it suspicious and when she looked, there was a letter inside the bowl. When she opened it to read:
"Having exhausted my heart on the paths of sea and mountain, tears flow from this stone bowl that is not [the true one]"
Princess Kaguya looked to see if it had any light, but there was not even the light of a firefly.
"It does not even harbor the light of settling dew—what could you have sought on Mount Okura?"
