とて返し出すはちを門に捨て此哥の返しをす
しら山にあへはひかりのうするかと
はちをすてゝもたのまるゝかな
とよみて入たりかくやひめ返しもせすなりぬ
みゝにもきゝ入さりけれはいひかゝつらひて【「言い拘ひ」＝うまく言えず難儀して】
帰りぬ彼はちをすてゝ又いひけるよりそおも
なき事をははちをすつるとは云けるくらも
ちの御子は心たはかり有人にておほやけには
つくしの國にゆあみにまからんとていとま
申てかくやひめの家には玉のえたとりになん
まかるといはせてくたり給ふにつかうまつる
現代語訳
と言って返し出す鉢を門に捨て、この歌の返歌をする。
「白山に会えば光の失せるかと 鉢を捨てても頼まるるかな」
と詠んで入った。かぐや姫は返歌もしなかった。耳にも聞き入れなかったので、言い困って帰った。あの鉢を捨てて、また言ったことから、つまらない事を「鉢を捨てる」とは言うようになった。
車持の御子は策略のある人で、朝廷には「筑紫の国に湯浴みに参ろう」と言って暇を申し、かぐや姫の家には「玉の枝を取りに参る」と言わせて下り給うのにお仕えする
英語訳
So saying, she threw the returned bowl out at the gate and composed this reply poem:
"When I meet Mount Shirayama, does its light fade away? Even throwing away the bowl, I still find it unreliable"
She sang this and went inside. Princess Kaguya made no reply poem. Since she didn't even listen, he struggled to find words and returned home. Because he threw away that bowl and spoke again, worthless things came to be called "throwing away bowls" (a failure).
Prince Kuramoto was a person of great cunning. To the court he said "I shall go to bathe in the hot springs of Tsukushi Province" and requested leave, while to Princess Kaguya's household he had it announced that "he goes to obtain the jeweled branch," and so he departed with his retainers serving him.
