はや此御子にあひつかうまつり給へといふに
物もいわすつらつえ【頬杖】をつきていみしくなけか
しけに思ひたり此御子今さへ何かといふへから
すと云まゝにえんにはひのほり給ぬおきな理
に思ふ此國にみえぬ玉の枝なり此度はいかて
かいなひ申さん人様もよき人におはすなとい
ひゐたりかくやひめの云様おやのの給ふ事を
ひたふるにいなひ申さんことのいとおしさに取
かたき者をかくあさましくもて来る事をね
たく思ひおきなはねやのうちしつらひなとす
おきな御子に申様いかなる所にか此木は候ひ
現代語訳
「早くこの御子にお仕え申し上げなさい」と言うのに、何も言わずに頬杖をついて、ひどく嘆かわしそうに思っていた。この御子が今更何を言おうかと、言うべきこともないと言うままに、縁側に上がっていらっしゃった。翁は道理だと思う。この国には見えない玉の枝である。今度はどうして断り申すことができようか。人柄もよい人でいらっしゃる、などと言っていた。かぐや姫が言うには「親のおっしゃることをひたすらに断り申すことの心苦しさに、手に入れがたい物をこのように見事に持参することを憎らしく思う」と。翁は寝室の内装などを整える。翁が御子に申すには「どのような所にこの木はございましたでしょうか」

"Quickly serve this prince," he said, but she said nothing, resting her chin on her hand and looking terribly sorrowful. As this prince said there was nothing more to say now, he stepped up onto the veranda. The old man thought it reasonable - this was a jeweled branch not seen in this country. How could he refuse this time? He is a person of good character, and so forth, he was saying. Princess Kaguya said, "Due to the pain of constantly refusing my parent's words, I resent that he has brought such a difficult-to-obtain item so magnificently." The old man began arranging the bedroom furnishings and such. The old man asked the prince, "In what kind of place was this tree found?"
