むと申て給へきなりといふをきゝてかくやひめ
くるゝ【暮るる】まゝに思ひはひ【思い侘び】つる心地わらひさかへ【笑い栄え＝満面に笑みをたたえ】
ておきなをよひとりて云やう誠ほうらいの木
かとこそおもひつれかくあさましきそらこと
にて有けれははや返し給へといへはおきなこた
ふさたかにつくらせたる物と聞つれはかへさんこ
といとやすしとうなつきをりかくやひめの
心ゆきはてゝありつるうたの返し
まことかと聞て見つれはことのはを
かされる玉のえたにそありける
といひて玉のえたも返しつ竹取のおきなさは

むと申して給うべきなり」というのを聞いて、かぐや姫は日が暮れるまでに思い悩んでいた心地が晴れ、満面に笑みを浮かべて翁を呼び寄せて言うことには「まことに蓬莱の木かと思っていましたが、このようにあさましい偽りであったならば、早く返しなさい」と言うと、翁は答えて「確かに作らせた物と聞いていたので、返すことはとても易しい」と頷いている折、かぐや姫の心はすっかり晴れ晴れとして、あの歌への返歌を詠んだ。
まことかと聞いて見てみれば言の葉を
飾られる玉の枝にぞありける
と言って玉の枝も返してしまった。竹取の翁はさあ
