なん申といふ大臣こたへて云此かははもろ
こしにもなかりけるをからうしてもとめたつ
ね得たる也なにのうたかひあらんさは申とも
はややきて見給へといへは火の中に打くへ
てやかせ給ふにめら〳〵とやけぬされはこそ
こと物【異物＝別物】のかはなりけりといふ大臣是を見給ひ
てかほは草のはの色にて居給へりかくやひめは
あなうれしとよろこひてゐたりかのよみ給ひ
ける哥の返しはこに入て返す
名残なくもゆとしりせはかわころも
思ひのほかにをきて見ましを
現代語訳
何を申し上げましょうかと言う。大臣が答えて言うには「この裘は唐土にもなかったものを、苦労してやっと求め探し得たものです。何の疑いがありましょうか。そうは申しても、早く焼いて御覧なさい」と言うので、火の中に投げ入れて焼かせなさると、めらめらと燃えてしまった。それではこそ別の物の皮であったのだと言う。大臣はこれを御覧になって、顔は草の葉の色（青ざめて）になってお座りになった。かぐや姫はああ嬉しいと喜んでいた。あの（大臣が）詠まれた歌の返歌を箱に入れて返す。
名残なく燃えるとわかっていたなら火鼠の裘を
思いがけなく置いて見たでしょうに
英語訳
"What shall I say?" he asks. The minister answers, saying, "This robe was something that did not exist even in China, but I struggled and finally managed to seek and obtain it. What doubt could there be? Even so, quickly burn it and see." So when they threw it into the fire to burn it, it blazed up in flames. "Then it was indeed the skin of some other creature," they said. When the minister saw this, his face turned the color of grass leaves (pale green) as he sat there. Princess Kaguya rejoiced, saying "Oh, how delightful!" She put her reply poem to the one he had composed into a box and returned it.
If I had known it would burn completely without trace,
I would have unexpectedly set aside this fire-rat robe to look at it.
