しのひてたゝとねり二人めしつきとしてやつれ
たまひて難波のあたりにおはしましてとひ給ふ
事は大伴の大納言の人や舟にのりてたつ

するに舟人こたへていはくあやしき事かなと
わらひてさるわさする船もなしとこたふるに
をちなき【考えが浅い】事する舟人にもあるかなえしらて
かくいふとおほしてわか弓の力はたつ【龍】あらはふ
といころしてくひの玉はとりてんをそくく
るやつはらをまたしとの給ひて舟に乗て海
ことにありき給ふるにいと遠くてつくしの方の

人目を忍んで、ただ舎人二人を召し使いとして身をやつして、難波のあたりにいらっしゃって尋ねになることは「大伴の大納言の人で、舟に乗って龍を殺してそれで火鼠の裘と呼ばれるものを取ると聞いているが」と問うたところ、船人が答えて言うことには「おかしなことだなあ」と笑って「そのようなことをする船もない」と答えるので、「浅はかなことを言う船人もいるものだ。知らないでこのように言う」とお思いになって、「私の弓の力は龍をも現すだろう。龍を殺して火鼠の裘は取ってみせるぞ。急げ、愚か者どもよ。待て」と仰せになって、舟に乗って海のあちこちを巡りなさるが、とても遠くて筑紫の方の

When the boatmen answered, they said "What a strange thing!" and laughed, replying "There are no ships that do such things." Thinking "What shallow-minded boatmen there are! They speak thus out of ignorance," he declared, "The power of my bow can manifest even dragons! I shall kill a dragon and obtain the fire-rat robe! Hurry, you fools! Wait!"
