あの所につばくらめは巣を作っております。そこに真面目な男たちを率いて参り、足場を組み上げて見張らせましょう。そうすれば、そこにいるつばくらめが子を産まないはずがありません。その時こそ取らせてあげましょう」と申し上げた。中納言は喜ばれて「面白いことであるなあ。もっともなことで、気づかなかった。興味深いことを申したものだ」とおっしゃって、真面目な男たち二十人ほどを遣わして、屋根に足場を組み上げさせた。殿からは使いを頻繁に遣わされて「子安貝は取れたか」とお尋ねになる。つばくらめも人がたくさん上って座っているのを恐れて、巣に近寄ろうとしない。このような状況が続く中で
