何も物はないと申し上げると、中納言は「悪く探ったのでないか」と腹を立てて、「誰ほどに思われようか」と言って、「自分が上って探ろう」とおっしゃって、籠に乗って釣り上げられて、うかがいなさった。すると燕が尾を開いてひどく回るのに合わせて手を差し上げて探りなさると、手に光る物が触れた時に、「我が物を握った。今は下ろしてよ。大きな仕事を成し遂げた」とおっしゃって、集まって早く下ろそうとして綱を引き過ぎて、綱が弛んだ途端に、八島の鼎の上に仰向けに落ちなさった。人々は呆れかえって寄って抱き奉った。お目は白目になって

When [Kuratsu-maro] reported that there was nothing there, the Middle Counselor became angry, saying "Did you not search properly?" and "What would people think of me?" He declared, "I shall climb up and search myself," and getting into the basket, was hoisted up to peer [into the nest]. As the swallows spread their tails and fluttered about frantically, he raised his hand in sync with their movement to search, and when something glittering touched his hand, he exclaimed, "I have grasped my prize! Lower me now! I have accomplished a great feat!" As everyone gathered to quickly lower him, they pulled the rope too forcefully, and the moment the rope went slack, he fell backwards onto the Yashima cauldrons. The people were utterly dismayed and rushed to support him. His eyes had rolled back showing only the whites.
