ふし給へり人々水をすくひ入奉るからうして
いき出給へるに又かなへの上より手とり足取
してさけおろし奉るからうして御ここちは
いかゝおほさるゝととへはいきの下にて物は
少覚ゆれとこしなんうこ【「と」と見えるは誤記か】かれぬされとこやす
貝をふとにきりもたれはうれしくおほゆる也
まつしそく【脂燭】してこゝのかいかほ見んと御くしも
たけて御手をひろけ給へるにつはくらめのま
り【大小便をする】をけるふるくそをにきり給へるなりけりそ
れを見給ひてあなかひなのわさやとのたまひ
けるよりそ思ふにたかふ事をはかひなしと

倒れなさった。人々は水をすくって注ぎ入れ申し上げて、ようやく息を吹き返しなさったが、また鼎の上から手を取り足を取りして助け起こし申し上げた。ようやく「お気持ちはいかがでございますか」とお尋ねすると、「息が苦しくて物は少し覚えるが、腰が動かれない。されど子安貝をしっかりと握っているので嬉しく思う」とおっしゃった。まず脂燭を持ってきて、ここの貝の顔を見ようと、お髪も乱れたまま御手を広げなさったところ、燕の糞である古い糞を握りなさっていたのであった。それをご覧になって「ああ、甲斐のない仕事であった」とおっしゃったことから、思うようにいかないことを「甲斐なし」と

[he] collapsed. The people scooped up water and poured it into his mouth, and he finally regained consciousness. Then they took him by the hands and feet to help him up from the cauldron. When they finally asked, "How do you feel?" he replied, "My breathing is labored and I can barely think, but my back won't move. However, I am pleased because I have firmly grasped the cowrie shell." First bringing a tallow candle to examine the face of this shell, with his hair still disheveled, he opened his hand, only to discover that what he had been gripping was old excrement—swallow droppings. Upon seeing this, he exclaimed, "Alas, what a futile endeavor!" From this incident, things that do not go as planned came to be called "kainashi" (futile).
